CHAPTER 24

HIVE

Around Oliver, everyone was talking all at once.

Despite having already seen the mob of undead earlier, Oliver took his turn with the binoculars, watching as the mass of zombies pushed and swayed in a tangled mass, like a mosh pit at Ozzfest. It was like the undead were trying to push their way into the center of the group.

In the back of Oliver’s mind, a tiny part of him had questioned if there had even been an asteroid. They were told an asteroid was coming by an announcement on the radio, followed by flashes in the sky, but no one had seen it. He wasn’t much on conspiracy theories, but it had made him wonder. Not now, though. After Radio Mike had talked to the guy from NASA, he was convinced more than ever that whatever was happening wasn’t from this world. “It’s crazy to think this could all have started with an asteroid.”

The chattering stopped.

When Oliver let the binoculars drop, all eyes were on him.

“Oliver, even after what we all just heard on the radio, are you saying you don’t believe it was an asteroid?” Fred asked.

“No. Not at all. I mean I know we can’t say with one hundred—”

Tommy laughed. “Oh great, another conspiracy theorist. Go on, trash man, what do you think it was? Let me guess, the government? You and my big brother ought to get along just fine. Two peas in a fucking pod!”

“No… that’s not what I said.” Oliver frowned, unsure how the conversation had spiraled out. “I just… Well, it’s just crazy to think an asteroid created that.”

Fred nodded. “Hell, up until that little conversation with Radio Mike, I thought it might be a terrorist group, or some global plan to control the population.”

“Here we go!” Tommy said, throwing his hands in the air.

Ray nodded along. “I was right there with you, Fred. But I guess if that NASA guy is to be believed, it was an asteroid after all.”

“What NASA guy?” Tommy asked.

“Long story. I’ll fill you in later.” Fred motioned to Oliver to pass the binoculars. “Still, whatever the source. I don’t think this is random. Asteroids don’t just turn on a dime at the last possible second.”

Martha put her arm around Fred’s waist. “I don’t know about you, but I feel better knowing we didn’t create this.”

Fred squeezed Martha close to him. “Don’t be so sure that’s better, dear. If our government had created this, maybe it would be easier to figure out how to uncreate it. But now, we’re truly dealing with the unknown.”

Oliver exchanged looks with Zoe, noticing she was quietly chewing at her lower lip in nervous thought. Oliver knew the look. She wanted to say something and was building up the nerve. He nodded his encouragement to her.

Zoe took a breath and held up a hand. “Everyone, please. Look, I wasn’t going to push this issue, but after seeing this, I feel it is even more important to perform as much research as possible. We need to understand what is happening now to understand what comes next.
